Frequent Gutter Questions

Hi there! Have some questions about gutters and our company? Find the answers below!

  • Are gutters necessary?

    Answer: Yes.

If you have a steep roof, your gutters can be an important feature of protection for your home. Gutters redirect water towards the ground when it rains. This prevents rivers from running down your yard and causing potential cracks in pavements or foundations of other homes. Gutters also collect leaves during autumn, as well as other debris landing on the roof by accident. They make it so everything doesn't gather together at one spot and block off drainage paths for rainwater to pass through cleanly and quickly or run into a storm drain where there's not enough capacity for all that they would collect while protecting people from being hit by materials such as granules coming through their gutters. You might want to consider installing gutters.

  • Can gutters cause roof leaks?

    Answer: Generally, no.

However, if you get any water on the roof from sources such as rainfall or plants on your roof (leaks can happen at any point), this water may overflow and be absorbed by your gutters. If these gutters are disconnected due to a misguided or lazy gutter installation, the rain will flow into the walls of your home rather than outside of it the way it was intended to. In this situation, and coupled with high winds during a stormy season, you could end up with an unpleasant wet surprise that would have been avoided if nothing more than common sense had been applied during gutter installation.

Truthfully we never really want anything leaking out of our homes; that just isn't good for anyone.

  • Can gutters be repaired?

    Answer: Yes.

Many of the points that contribute to gutters leaking or failing are often simple enough to fix (small cracks, cleanouts, clogs, etc). For extreme cases like a collision with a tree or dramatically large trees overhead, it may not be possible without replacing the entire gutter. Gutters and downspouts should also be inspected periodically for signs of damage. A buildup of dirt and leaves can lead to channels becoming plugged up. This can cause water to splash out when it rains, damaging walls and trim but also leading to leaks in other places. The first step in fixing this problem is usually just vacuuming out debris that accumulates around them as they get less water flow over time.

  • How are my gutter guards installed?

Answer: Gutter guards installed by professionals are best because that way they allow you to remove leaves and other debris before it clogs your gutters.

If a gutter guard is installed properly, leaf and debris can't get into the guttering system. And for those homeowners who choose to clean their gutters themselves, gutter guards provide peace of mind that leaves won't quickly build up on top of the screen and block water from draining out through the top opening. It's best not to have them loose or with a loosely fitted grate across them. If these provisions aren't met then roots could work their way in causing damage inside. So just be vigilant about having an inspection either annually or biannually.

  • When should I clean my gutters?

Answer: If your gutters are overflowing, it's always a good idea to schedule an appointment for gutter cleaning as soon as possible.

If the gutters are not overflowing and you have never cleaned them, we would recommend scheduling an appointment for a yearly gutter cleaning just in case there is debris that is about to slide out and cause a blockage.

If your gutters are flowing fine but they need cleaning because of old, this might be enough time between cleanings. However, if debris has collected on your plastic or metal downspouts that lead away from the roof and caused pooling at the base of your house, we recommend getting these cleaned off periodically too (these cleanings will usually be more frequent).

  • Why are seamless gutters better?

Failing gutters and clogged downspouts can lead to water damage, structural damage, and aesthetic damage. But with seamless gutters from Premier Construction, your property will have excellent protection against the elements thanks to our superior design.

Seamless aluminum has the distinction of not creating leaks where joints exist between sections of gutter; unlike a steel gutter that will suffer gaps in seams when it folds or is bent back on itself. These leaking points are fragile areas for both systems. With seamless gutters, these leak spots do not exist making the system stronger overall.

Moreover, seamless aluminum is much more lightweight than many other materials which mean we can use fewer brackets and supports as needed for mounting.

  • Can you install gutters yourself?

In most cases, gutter installation is a job best left to the professionals. Not only does it require special tools and equipment, but there is also a certain level of skill and experience needed to do the job correctly. That being said, there are some instances where DIY gutter installation might be possible – particularly if you have a small section of gutters that need to be replaced or installed.

If you’re considering attempting DIY gutter installation, it’s important to make sure that you have the proper tools and supplies on hand. You’ll need a ladder (or access to one), as well as a variety of gutter hangers, brackets, screws, and sealants. It’s also a good idea to familiarize yourself with the process before you start, so that you know what to expect.

Ideally, gutter installation should be done by a professional. But if you’re determined to tackle the job yourself, make sure you have the right tools and supplies, and take the time to understand the process.

  • Do you really need gutters?

Gutters serve an important purpose – they help to protect your home from water damage by channeling water away from your roof and foundation. Without gutters, rainwater can pool around your home, seep into your basement or crawl space, and cause serious damage. So, even if you’re not planning on doing any gutter installation yourself, it’s still important to make sure that your home has a functioning gutter system.

  • What is a Seamless gutter?

Seamless gutters are gutters that are formed from a single piece of material, rather than being pieced together from several smaller pieces. Seamless gutters are less likely to leak than traditional gutters, and they also offer a more finished look. However, they can be more difficult to install, so it’s generally best to leave this type of gutter installation to the professionals.

  • Why install gutters?

As we mentioned, gutters serve an important purpose in protecting your home from water damage. But they can also help to keep your yard and landscaping looking nice by channeling water away from these areas. Additionally, gutters can help to prevent staining on your home’s siding and trim.
